Paul McCartney köper ’Adagrose Ltd’
I och med köpet av företaget blev Paul McCartney den ende direktören för företaget, vilket hade grundats av Leonard Lewis och Francis Dean och bolagiserades den 30 december 1968. Av bolagsdokumenten framgår att företagets uttalade syfte var:
To employ and exploit and turn to account the services of actors, composers, authors and other professional persons and to carry on business as theatrical employment and literary agents and artistes and author’s personal representatives and managers in all their branches, distributors, agents and managers for theatrical, film and television productions and to act as agents for the purchase, sale, hiring and exploitation thereof; to manufacture, buy, hire, sell, let on hire and deal in all kinds of literary, musical, dramatic and other entertainments, cinematograph and other films and pictures, plays, opera, comedy, stage piece or musical composition and any photographic and other apparatus capable of being used in connection therewith, to construct, equip and carry on theatres, cinemas and other buildings and conveniences for that purpose; to acquire the copyright of any opera, comedy, play, stage piece, or musical compositions and to publish, distribute, sell and transcribe on to recordings any and all musical compositions and to secure copyrights thereof; to enter into any agreements thought desirable with authors, composers, actors or others; and to produce, distribute, rent or otherwise deal in cinematograph films, and to act as a holding company for any company.
Företaget var till för att McCartney skulle kunna hantera sina egna affärsintressen, vilket markerade början till det formella uppbrottet med The Beatles, som nyligen fått sig utsett gruppens affärsmanager i Allen Klein. McCartney hade blivit alltmer intresserad av att förvärva publiceringsrättigheter och ville kontrollera sina egna intressen utan de övriga beatlarna.
Den 21 augusti 1969 fick företaget ett nytt namn – McCartney Productions Ltd., vilket slutligen resulterade i MPL Communications, ett av världens största privatägda musikförlag.
Det var efter diskussioner med Lee Eastman, hans blivande svärfar, och John Eastman, hans blivande svåger, som Paul McCartney blev intresserad av musikförlagsbranschen; att starta ett eget företag erbjöd möjligheten att köpa andra artisters upphovsrätt; med Allen Klein som Beatles affärschef den 3 februari, kan Paul ha undrat hur illa det kunde bli under de kommande månaderna;
