Johnny Gentle & The Beatles First Ever Tour Scotland 1960
Mellan den 20 och 28 maj 1960 ackompanjerade John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe och trummisen Tommy Moore sångaren Johnny Gentle under hans Skottlandsturné. The Silver Beetles var ett av flera band som provspelade för managern Larry Parnes i Liverpool på The Blue Angel, som tidigare hette the Wyvern Social Club, och låg på Seel Street nummer 106-108. Stället ägdes av Alan Williams. Men då satt Johnny Hutchinson vid trummorna som inhoppare för Tommy Moore som inte kunde närvara under provspelningen.

Johnny Gentle som egentligen hette John Askew föddes i Liverpool den 8 december 1936 och gick bort för två dagar sedan, den 7 mars 2024 i en ålder av 87 år. Han blev berömd efter att ha vunnit en talangtävling i London och fick kontrakt snart därefter med Philips Records.
Han kom ut med två singlar i samband med att 1960-talet inleddes. Och inom kort hade han – numera med artistnamnet Johnny Gentle – slagit an hos den kvinnliga publiken. Det var dags för honom att åka på turné i Skottland tillsammans med ett gäng Liverpoolmusiker.
Johnny Gentle berättar:
Larry Parnes, my and Billy Fury’s manager, negotiated tours of Scotland with booking agent Duncan McKennon for most of Parnes’ artists to do a tour of several dance halls scattered around Scotland. Rather than send backing groups from London he arranged to audition Liverpool groups. It was arranged that the Beatles would back me.
Paul McCarteny berättar:
In May, Larry Parnes came to town, auditioning. He was the big London agent. His acts nearly always had a violent surname. There was Ronnie Wycherley who became Billy Fury; and a less furious guy you have yet to meet. A sweet Liverpool guy – the first local man who made it, in our eyes. Marty Wilde was also in Larry’s stable; he had another tempestuous surname. But Larry Parnes had some new singers and was looking for backing groups, and someone had told him there were a few groups around in Liverpool. So he came up to the Blue Angel. Billy Fury came with him.

Förutom The Silver Beetles provspelade band som Cass and the Cassanovas, Derry and the Seniors, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Cliff Roberts and the Rockers.
They were going to use the Blue Angel, which in those days was called the Wyvern Social Club, to audition back-up bands for Larry Parnes’s acts. Beforehand we went out and bought some string shoes with little white bits on top. We were very poor and never had any matching clothes, but we tried to put together a uniform – black shirts and these shoes. When we arrived at the club our drummer hadn’t shown up, so Johnny Hutchinson, the drummer with Cass and the Cassanovas, sat in with us. I don’t think we played particularly well or particularly badly.

We sent the Beatles my repertoire about two weeks before the start of the tour so they could practice… The first night could have been better so we rehearsed all the next day and the second night was much better. They were a real fun bunch of lads.

Johnny Gentle skrev en låt tillsammans med John Lennon – I’ve Just Fallen For Someone – som han skrev i sin självbiografi (se boken ovan) att han hade komponerat med lite hjälp från John.
